Probably the first producing well in Wayne County was on the Morgan Farm in the Slickford field. The oil was hauled to the Cumberland River and shipped by boat to Nashville. A pipe line was laid from the Sunnybrook field somewhat later by the Standard Oil Company and the oil was piped to a refinery at Parkersburg, West Virginia. A great many technical difficulties had to be overcome. Drake’s chief technical contribution to the project was the introduction of a pipe lining in the drill hole. After a year and a half of effort, on Aug , at a depth of 69 feet, the drillers struck a pool of oil, and the world’s first oil well came into existence. Norman No. 1 was the first oil well west of the Mississippi River to produce a commercial quantity of oil. It was also the first well drilled in the vast Mid-Continent oil field that covers parts of Kansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Texas.
